Notes: This was a great surprise dress! It looks very simple but the double dart and interesting side seam with pocket make this dress more than meets the eye. The heavy but drapey hemp was perfect for this sew.
I personally think the ties are very cute but also pretty fussy to sew and tie but have long hair. I think maybe I could tie them then pull it over my head-but haven't checked yet.
I sewed this with french seams but found the side seam with stitched down pocket a little tricky to navigate- but I figured it out and it wasn't too hard.
I think the front hem facing doesn't need to be so long- if the pocket opening had a little bias strip facing for the pocket opening, the hem facing can be the same height as the back facing which could make the side seam a lot simpler to sew.
I sewed it again immediately after in purple viscose linen noil with not ties and an inseam pocket and the shorter front hem facing. I can pull it over the head no problem- sewing the shoulders is tricky without having the tie- you have to be neat. I ended up stitching the pocket to the dress anyway but the shorter facing was awesome. The hem and side were a lot easier to sew. Very fast the second time!
I think the hemp was a much better fabric weight for me. But the linen noil is great-just different.
